Artwork Series Études

Études is an ongoing series of drawings inspired by the idea of home, belonging, and the search for a place to feel rooted. Having moved many times throughout my life—from leaving my natal home to living in different countries—I have come to understand home less as a fixed place and more as something carried within us, continually searched for and redefined. The shell becomes a symbol of this journey: a portable sanctuary, a trace of a life once lived, and a vessel for memory and protection.

Each work is titled Étude, referring to the musical study: a composition through which a particular skill is practised and mastered. I want to make an analogy that by the process of drawing the search of home is cultivated. At the same time, I return to the tradition of 19th-century botanical studies, where for me the act of observing and rendering them becomes a form of close study: a magnifying glass turned inward, tracing the details of both the shell and my own evolving sense of home.

The shells I draw are collected from places where I have lived. The series currently consists of eight works and remains open and ongoing, with each new drawing marking another step in this personal journey.

Études are available as prints in A2 and A3 size.
